German police have taken delivery of the last in a series of four powerful new patrol boats adding a new dimension to supervision of extended coastal waters in an increasingly busy sector of the Baltic.

The new 27.2m long Fehmarn, follows the 34.2m, 26 knot Sylt, delivered in April 2009, and two previous 27.2m boats. Fehmarn is based in the Baltic port of Heiligenhafen, east of Kiel and close to the site of the future planned Fehmarn Belt fixed link between Germany and Denmark.

Modern propulsion and electronics along with spacious quarters make Fehmarn capable of fast maximum 24 knot operation. It is capable of not only daily but also longer missions with a five or six man crew. Built, as were its series companions by specialist small ship builder Fassmer Werft in Berne, it is based on yard designs already incorporated into boats supplied to police in the east German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Fehmarn, which is 6.2m wide and draws a maximum of 1.6m, is built of aluminium alloy to high speed code standards and has a specially shaped hull which Fassmer said reduced swell and provided ‘excellent manoeuverability and sea-holding’.

The vessel is driven by two 900kW MTU main engines of Type 10 V 2000 M72 over ZF 300 A gearboxes and four blade Schaffran fixed propellers. Power generation units are a 110 kW Hansa 420 DSRG marine and a 53 kW 320 DSRG marine from the same maker. A Kraeft bow thruster is also fitted.

Navigation equipment on the new Fehmarn includes a Raytheon-Anschuetz STD 21 SAT compass and a Type NP automatic helm control unit. Kelvin Hughes MANTA 2000-ATA radar and ECDIS electronic sea chart are also on board while FURONO has supplied GP-150 GPS and an FE-700 echo sounder. Fehmarn also carries a Palfinger PK 8000 TM on board crane for use with a 5.4m long Koeser Marine AVON Searider commercial Suzuki DF 60 tender.
