The MOS4MOS action continues to gain momentum, as the Activity 2 of the Action came to a close during the Information Days in Livorno, Italy last week.

Hosted by the Port Authority of Livorno, the Prototyping Information Days took place on the premises of the Livorno Chamber of Commerce. The President of the Port Authority, Giuliano Gallanti, together with the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Roberto Nardi, welcomed more than 50 delegates during the opening session.

Luis Valente de Oliveira, the European Coordinator for the Motorways of the Sea, closed the Opening Session by underlining the extraordinary vision and work of the 28 partners of the European project involving representatives from Spain, Italy, Slovenia and Greece’s public and private sectors.

The European Union has previously recognised the Motorways of the Sea as the path forward within its new 2050 transport policy detailed in the 2011 White Paper. Once again this, and the important international cooperation among the 28 partners of the MOS4MOS, project was stressed by José Laranjeira Anselmo, the chief administrator for the Trans-European Transport Network.

Laranjeira Anselmo emphasized the need for the partners to implement a top-down approach during the implementation stage of the project. The initiatives and the electronic solutions developed for the 15 prototypes of the project should not try to ‘re-invent the wheel’, rather they should complement the existing cross-border policies and through their cooperation with the customs of the different Mediterranean countries, encouraging the implementation of the proposed ICT solutions.

The European project MOS4MOS works towards the development of ICT solutions to improve ro-ro and container transport in the Motorways of the Sea between Spain, Italy, Slovenia and Greece. It is scheduled to release its findings next spring, and aims to increase and improve the integration of different transport modes involved in the motorways of the sea, road, and rail.

The next stage of the project will be to publicly demonstrate the solutions over the upcoming months. Some of the prototypes will be publicly demonstrated during the Information Days in Barcelona, scheduled for April, while others will be demonstrated in other ports during the months to follow.
