Thermal Imaging Enhances Fire Safety Training

01 Sep 2002

The recent fires aboard DFDS Seaways' Princess of Scandanavia, extinguished by crew members before severe damage was caused or lives placed at risk is a reminder of the importance of fire safety training at sea.

Crew from DFDS Seaways' flagship Queen of Scandanavia were trained on board by staff from the South Tyneside College Fire Training Centre, which has recently introduced thermal imaging technology so that officers undergoing training can be constantly observed and assessed throughout the training process.

The Centre boasts excellent facilities for hot fire training in the marine and offshore sectors, including a purpose built simulation building with fixed fire fighting installations and breathing apparatus. DFDS Seaways crew were well trained and prepared for the recent fire, bringing it under control and allowing the vessel to proceed under her own steam, a testament to the introduction of new techniques such as hot fire training.

Hot fire training gives personnel a far greater awareness of the reality of fire situations and the best ways to handle them.

Invaluable experience is gained by training in a properly simulated blaze, where the Centre utilises the new thermal imaging facility to evaluate trainee performance.
