The Damen Shoalbuster 2709 ‘Isa’ has recently been delivered to Wijk bij Duurstede-based V.O.S. Sleepboot ISA replacing another tug of the same name.

Wijk bij Duurstede is on border between Utrecht and Gelderland provinces of the Netherlands but it was at Hardinxveld towards the end of last year that Willem-Harm Mastenbroek, owner and managing director of V.O.F. Sleepboot ISA signed the contract for the new vessel with Jos van Woerkum, managing director of Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld.

Damen yard number 571705, a product of its China facility at Changde was subsequently delivered by heavylift vessel to the Netherlands for stock and completed as the Isa for its new owner.

The Shoalbuster is a 2709 marque denoting length overall of 27.02m and beam 9.1m: other dimensions include: depth at sides 3.6m, draught aft 2.63m and gross tonnage 221t. Main tank capacities are 125.1m2 fuel oil and 30m3 fresh water.

V.O.S. Sleepboot ISA undertake projects across north west Europe and as far east as the Caspian Sea and Isa’s basic functions are listed as: towing, mooring, pushing, anchor-handling and dredge support. It is classed by Bureau Veritas with the notation: 1+HULL, MACH, Tug unrestricted service, AUT-UMS. It also meets ILT unrestricted regulations and flies the Dutch flag.

Power is provided by two Caterpillar 3512C TA/A main engines developing 2,238bkW (3,000bhp) in total at 1,600rpm. Auxiliary machinery includes two Caterpillar C-4.4 TA gensets each with a capacity of 86.3kVA (230/400V) and a single Caterpillar C-09 TA hydraulic set (269kW at 1,800rpm).

Propulsion is from two 2,100mm Promarin fixed-pitch propellers in DMC Optima nozzles via Reintjes WAF 665/5.95:1 gearboxes. Steering is by Straathof and WK Hydraulics and performance figures include a bollard pull of 41.2t maximum and speed 11kn.

Deck machinery comprises a DMT hydraulically-driven anchor-handling/towing winch. Holding power of both drums is 125t with the towing element accommodating 850m of 40mm wire and 650m of 40mm wire on the anchor-handling drum. An HS Marine AKC 185/18.5 E4 deck crane (5.5t at 18.5m) is located on the starboard side of the towing guide immediately abaft the winch. Deck machinery also includes WK Hydraulic double-pin type towing pins with chain stopper and a Dromec HPV12000, 12t(m) at 4.5m/min tugger winch.

Heated and air-conditioned accommodation is provided for seven persons in three single and two double-berth cabins, all at main deck level along with a galley, mess and sanitary facilities.

A well-equipped wheelhouse includes: radar, GPS, AIS, echo sounder, speedlog and Navtex all by Furuno along with VHF/DSC, SSB/DSC and Mini-C System GMDSS by Thrane & Thrane. Two 2,000W searchlights are supplied by Pesch while Cassens & Plath and Anschuetz provide the compass systems. Radio Zeeland supplied the autopilot on Isa.
