World's largest LNG carrier in Milford Haven
The arrival of LNG carriers will soon be a regular feature of port life in Milford Haven
Mozah, the world’ s largest LNG carrier, arrived at the Welsh port of Milford Haven last week, berthing at the South Hook Terminal. The Q-Max vessel has the ability to carry up to 266,000 m3 of LNG, enough to heat every home in the UK for one day.
Milford Haven is already one of the largest oil and gas ports in northern Europe with a traffic mix of crude oil carriers, refined product and LPG (liquid petroleum gas) shipping using the port to service the two oil refineries of Chevron and Murco and the oil terminal of SemLogistics. Along with a mix of other shipping traffic, including ferries, fishing and general cargo, some 50 million gross tons of shipping use the port each year.
To this mix will be added the extra dimension of LNG ships. The new Dragon LNG and South Hook LNG terminals between them have a capacity to supply up to 25% of the UK's gas requirement and are expected to be fully commissioned during the first half of this year.
With the arrival of LNG in Milford Haven highlighting the investment potential of the waterway, the spotlight has turned onto development opportunities along its shores.
Along with a strong property portfolio held by the Port Authority itself which offers a range of commercial and office accommodation for purchase and let, there is keen interest in the last major brownfield site on the Haven with potential access to deep water.
The 8 hectare site at Blackbridge, a former munitions factory, is owned by Pembrokeshire County Council, and plans are in hand for us to market it jointly with them and International Business Wales, the inward investment arm of the Welsh Assembly Government.
