To protect passengers from the risk of on board fires, the vessels are being equipped with FM-200 fire suppression systems from Sea-Fire Marine which are available here through Sea-Fire Europe ofHampshire UK.
The water taxis utilise FD 150 model extinguishers which are designed to protect engine compartments up to 4.25m 3. The FD systems operate automatically through heat activation. However, they can also have an ‘M’ designation indicating that they can be manually operated. In this instance, the boat operator has the option of pulling a discharge cable which activates the fire system.
The 54 model FD line features corrosion resistant refillable cylinders that accommodate most marine engine compartments.
FM-200 extinguishing agent is environmentally responsible in that it does not deplete the ozone layer and leaves no residue after dispersal. It will not damage sensitive electronics and is recognised as perhaps the most effective replacement for halon, which is now banned and/or being phased out globally.
