Sangoma’s builder/owners, John Butt and Taffy Goldstone, work a 21 day fishing cycle throughout the squid season that leaves no scope for engine failure or excessive maintenance downtime. The aim is always to get to the fishing grounds as quickly as possible, maximise the time spent fishing and processing, then return to port as quickly as possible.
The choice of engines for their six year old vessel was validated shortly after the repower, when Sangoma rescued another fishing vessel whose engine had failed 35 miles from shore and towed it back to port through gale force winds and huge storm seas.
The 215hp, turbocharged and intercooled 6 cylinder, 6 litre engines, which develop their maximum power at 2,500rpm, are designed to reduce the maximum cylinder pressure while optimising low speed engine performance. This makes a significant contribution towards the engines’ reliability and durability, especially as Sangoma typically hauls an average of between eight and 12 tonnes of squid on each trip.
The hard working 4TGM genset engine must run a blast freezer that holds up to 3.5 tonnes of squid plus two 6 tonne freezers while still providing power for 13 of the 2kW lights that are essential for attracting the squid while fishing.
