Exhibiting for the third consecutive year at Seawork provides the academy with a vital link to the seafarers and companies working within the workboat and offshore environment. WMA’s specialist commercial marine training covers key areas such as: CoC for Master workboats less than 500gt (and up to 3,000gt); deck, marine engineer and electro-technical officer training up to Master and Chief Engineer (Unlimited) level; STCW courses in fire fighting and sea survival; OPITO accredited offshore oil and gas safety courses; HELM management and operational levels; ECDIS navigation training; GMDSS radio certificates; STCW; safety and security management courses; and offshore windfarm courses approved by RenewableUK.
Visitors to the WMA stand at Seawork 2014 can gain current advice on maritime training requirements relevant to their own personal needs, as well as their employers, particularly in respect to the Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention (STCW 2010), which is bringing in a whole raft of changes. One of the most significant amendments is the requirement for all seafarers to update some elements of the mandatory STCW safety training by January 2017. In addition, WMA offers the training and structured progression career path towards the new MCA Master Certificate of Competency, restricted to workboats of 500gt or less with an unlimited area of operation.
The academy will demonstrate its new learning app dedicated to supporting the training of maritime personnel. The Warsash app is available for iPads and can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store. It gives seafarers access to updated course materials, career progression charts, WMA’s maritime course offering, news and a wide range of training FAQs. Students already enrolled on the academy’s commercial yacht deck and engineering courses have the additional benefit of accessing their course materials with a user name and password. Access to course notes will shortly be rolled out to students undertaking unlimited certification, starting with phase one officer cadets.
