The NLWKN is responsible for coastal, marine and river protection, measurement, monitoring and flood control and runs a large fleet of mainly small but highly specialised vessels.

The police patrol boat W 2 is part of the River Police fleet, just downriver in the busy North Sea port of Emden, came in for propeller, shaft and rudder plant inspection. Hull conservation work was also carried out and inspection by local ship safety and traffic authorities.

The 42m long Emden-based inland bunker boat Herrentor docked to have repair and maintenance jobs attended to along with conservation. The list of works included a ship bottom inspection by experts as well as scrutiny of the vessel’s propeller, shaft and rudder.

The yard’s regular seasonal bread and butter work on the ships of local ferry operators, particularly those in service between the north German mainland and German East Frisian islands, continues to provide most of the action at Diedrich.

The biggest ships to call were two RoRo island supply freight ships operating with Reederei Frisia. They were listed as the 57.8m FRISIA VIII, only seven years old, and the 34 year old 53m long FRISIA VII. Their low draughts, put at 1.35m and 1.45m respectively, reflect the changeable shallow water conditions the duo has to operate in.

Both ships came for about a week of routine pre-season repairs and maintenance covering below surface and external hull conservation as well as inspection and servicing of propellers, shafts and rudders. Diedrich made special mention of inspection work on the rudders and the Veth bow thrusters installed on FRISIA VII.

A third island supply ship in for work was Langeoog’s 37.2m cargo boat PIONIER, which underwent shaft repairs. Langeoog officials reported that interesting boat was built in Mannheim 65 years ago for American interests before transfer to the German Army in1955 where it served until 1973. Originally 31.25m long it was lengthened and given a board-crane at Diedrich in 1986.

A passenger ferry serving the same island and carrying 351 passengers was also at Diedrich of late. The 31m LANGEOOG I underwent regular repairs, maintenance and hull conservation as well as servicing of its high performance rudder plant, both propellers and shafts and final inspection by DNV-GL.

By Tom Todd

A research ship, a bunker boat and a police launch have lent variety to a busy workload at one of Germany’s leading small ship and boat repair yards this summer.

[13
["post-3318","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-shipyard-news
["GET
