The flap operation linkage system of the Barke rudder is contained in fully enclosed grease lubricated housing. This results in minimum wear on the linkage components and eliminates the risk of sand entry or the mechanical effects of contact with floating objects or ice. An overload protection system is provided to prevent the main rudder jamming.

The Timon flap type rudder has a slide bar flap linkage. The flap type principle provides a high maximum lift that results in a first class manoeuvring performance. The simple slide bar flap linkage is easy to maintain and construct, whilst the slim profile design ensures that the drag is low.

This steering gear incorporates the second generation of compact rudder actuators designed by Paul Wagner. Van der Velden Commander rotary vane steering gear is available in rudder angles from 2 x 35 degrees to 2 x 65 degrees and over a torque range from 25 kNm to over 1600 kNm. The simple, robust and compact design of the steering gear and the fact that it only has one movable part promises maintenance free operation for over 60,000 hours, with significant cost savings the long term result.

The complete manoeuvring packages for oceangoing vessels includes rudders (high-lift Van der Velden Master rudder, Atlantic rudder, Barke rudder, Timon rudder, Art rudder, rudder trunks, streamline bodies, Commander ram type steering gear (including foundations), Commander rotary vane steering gear, steerable nozzles and the EPS thruster.

Van der Velden Marine Systems presentation at SMM 2008 will include the EPS silent thruster, an Art rudder, a Barke rudder, a Timon rudder and Van der Velden Commander steering gear.
