Modernise maritime safety regulations - and the way they are implemented

About us

The work of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) makes a vital difference to hundreds of people every single day. The Directorate of Maritime Safety & Standards is responsible for UK survey and inspection operations, and UK safety, environmental and navigational regulation regimes. This includes the safety of vessels in UK waters and UK vessels operating outside UK waters.

Our vision is to be the best maritime safety organisation in the world – and we believe that comes from taking a fresh look at our organisation. We’re creating a cohort of new, senior managers from diverse backgrounds to challenge our culture, inspire our people and drive us forward. Together we’ll build a modern, agile, faster-paced organisation.

The opportunity

You will support the Director of Maritime Safety & Standards in leading the modernisation of our regulatory policy function. Specifically, you will ensure that regulatory innovation supports safer lives, safer ships and cleaner seas while meeting the needs of ship operators and the future growth of the UK Ship Register. It’s work that matters. The role includes the effective management of the directorate’s finance, human resources development, information technology and risk functions. You will also represent the MCA at local, national and international events.

The person

Your background in the maritime or shipping industry will have given you a good knowledge of maritime safety regulations, along with an understanding of flag-state responsibilities and related audit, examination and inspection functions. Your experience of managing a diverse team of people will be matched by proven analytical and organisational skills. You’ll be capable of providing authoritative advice to senior people and will be able to present complex information to a variety of audiences. The ability to influence others and achieve consensus will be key. Some national and international travel will be required.
