The Thames is a growing port, the UK’s second biggest, and the Port of London Authority (PLA) is one of the country’s largest pilotage authorities.

The Upper District of the Port of London Authority is home to a diverse range of activities including international shipping, passenger boat services, intra-port freight operations and recreational activity within a confined and challenging waterway.  In addition the Thames supports over 300 events per year, marine filming operations for major productions and promotional events.

We are currently seeking a forward thinking, determined and imaginative individual, able to work within a small team to fill the position of Deputy Harbour Master.  Closely supporting the Harbour Master, you will enforce the Port of London Act, investigate navigational and pollution incidents, conduct risk assessments, assess the competence of Pilotage Exemption Certificate applications and act as a PLA examiner for Boatmaster Licences. You will also be required to represent the PLA at high profile forums.

You will be a self starter with lots of initiative and will not be afraid to make decisions in order to meet your responsibilities for running day to day operations and events in the highly diverse environment that is the upper tidal Thames. In addition the role requires a detailed and enquiring mind, which is essential for conducting incident and accident investigations, which together with the enforcement of harbour regulations forms a major part of the role.

Applicants should ideally hold a STCW II/2 (Masters Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or equivalent or a lesser STCW / BML Certificate, and have at least 5 years relevant management experience in the marine and ports industry, including in particular, navigational safety management and risk assessment.  You must be able to lead, motivate and manage effectively and have proven and effective interpersonal skills.  Good writing skills and an ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.
