Editor - Admiralty List of Radio Signals
£25,324 plus excellent benefits
Do you want to utilise your GIS skills and understanding of Maritime communications and radio systems to help keep the Mariner Safe at Sea? Are you looking for a role where you will actively be empowered to develop yourself and learn new skills?
The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is a world-leading maritime data solutions agency specialising in marine geospatial data to help people make the best use of our oceans in safer, more secure and more sustainable ways.
Admiralty List of Radio Signals is a six-volume publication with contents ranging from Maritime Radio Station listings to Maritime Safety Information Services worldwide. In order for the publication to meet its aim in improving safety of life at sea, its content needs to be regularly maintained and updated using a range of GIS tools/databases. As an Editor, based on your area of knowledge of maritime tracking and information systems you will be given overall responsibility for one of the volumes, but you may also be required to support the maintenance of other volumes from time to time. Specifically, your role will entail:
- Acquiring updates to data from external sources and via research;
- Assessing all new incoming data using GIS databases;
- Writing and promulgating navigationally significant notices to mariners;
- Producing each new edition to meet the publication schedule;
- Being the UKHO points of contact for radio information.
To be successful in this role you will need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, flexing your time between tasks, including often re-prioritising at short notice in response to surges in data receipt. You will have experience of using GIS software packages, an understanding of the principles of radio propagation, and will be familiar with maritime tracking and information systems, such as: Automatic Identification System (AIS); NAVTEX; Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS); Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).
A genuine interest in ensuring the safety of the mariner at sea is fundamental along with the drive to routinely look for opportunities to continuously improve the ALRS products for the customer.
We will actively empower you to develop yourself and provide flexible working practices for a healthy work/life balance. You will also benefit from a brand-new award-winning office, with use of our on-site gym, free parking and subsidised canteen.
