With large and wide-ranging responsibilities, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) works collaboratively to protect the environment and to maintain and grow the rural economy.

The UK’s impending exit from the EU continues to set us new and exciting challenges. Join us for a career defining opportunity to contribute to the development of new approaches and policies affecting millions of people across the country.

Taking a lead role in helping Defra negotiate free-trade agreements affecting the future of the UK economy, you will:

* Work with policy professionals to provide comprehensive negotiation support in a specified policy area. This will either be within the EU and International Trade team or the Marine and Fisheries team.

* Be allocated to a specified workstream where you will support the coordination of policy strategy on topics such as the development of border arrangements with the EU, or managing access to the UK’s waters.

* Facilitate discussions, using your situational judgement skills to find common ground between a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external to UK Government.

* Become an expert in your specified field, supporting colleagues with your exemplary knowledge. You will also share this information with more junior colleagues, potentially line-managing them as necessary.

* Network widely with external stakeholders, building relationships with a broad array of people and organisations including representatives of EU and non-EU nations, cross-departmental colleagues, wider industry professionals, Directors and Ministers.

* There is also the potential line management responsibility for a small team.

Driving the negotiations within your particular area, you will excel in this role if you have outstanding leadership and influencing skills. With the capacity to work quickly and efficiently, you will be resilient in the face of set-backs, with strong composure and plenty of initiative. You will need a proactive attitude and have the flexibility to travel abroad in order to develop global trade opportunities. Crucially, you will be keen to build relationships and lead a team, with a clear and concise way of expressing yourself. While experience in a negotiation role would be beneficial, it is more important that you have experience of managing stakeholders at all levels and the capacity to build your knowledge of the fishing industry or international trade.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You will have access to learning and development from quality providers and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.
