Halcrow has been commissioned by the UK's Environment Agency to undertake a strategic review of the approach to the flood defence system within the Stour and Orwell Estuary complex on the Essex and Suffolk borders.

Surveys carried out in recent years to assess the condition of the area's flood defences have shown there is a clear need for long term flood management at many sites in order to reduce long term flood risk and enhance the natural environment.

A flood management strategy will establish the policies and objectives for the next 100 years and provide a decision framework for the most appropriate flood defences. It will take into account a broad range of local interests and issues in providing a framework for the future.

Nigel Pontee, Halcrow's project manager said, 'Halcrow has started to collect data for the study and is currently identifying the key issues. As part of this process, the company will be undertaking an inspection of the sea defences and will work to identify a range of strategy objectives, including technical, environmental and economic considerations. A number of flood defence options will be evaluated against these objectives. Halcrow is currently undertaking a number of strategic flood defence studies for the Environment Agency and is using its experience to develop and refine its flood strategy processes.'
