The Scottish Government has awarded planning consent for four offshore wind projects with a potential total capacity of 2.28GW.

The Firth of Forth Zone is one of UK’s Round 3 development zones and is being developed by Seagreen Wind Energy Ltd, a joint venture between SSE and Fluor. Overall, the zone (around 25km east of Fife) has a potential capacity of 3.5GW and planning consent has now been granted for Projects Alpha and Bravo, Phase 1 of the zone. The two windfarms will see up to 150 turbines with a potential capacity of 1,050MW.

Mainstream Renewable Power’s £1.5bn investment in the 450MW Neart na Gaoithe windfarm will see up to 75 turbines installed 15km off the Fife coast, providing energy for 325,000 homes (more than the number of homes in Edinburgh) with first electricity generated by 2018.

Around 15km off the Angus coast is the location chosen by Inch Cape Offshore Ltd, a joint venture between Repsol Nuevas Energias UK Ltd and EDP Renewables UK Ltd, for their proposed 1,000MW offshore windfarm. Up to 213 turbines are planned at Inch Cape, energy being collected at up to five offshore substations. The lease agreement with The Crown Estate will last for 50 years.
