RNLI Trial New Range of Workboat Window Wipers

Bridge window wipers Class 110. Bridge window wipers Class 110.

Berkshire UK based Duro Marine International has won a significant endorsement for its new range of pantograph and pendulum ships bridge and workboat window wipers, with sets being trialed on two new training boats currently under build for the RNLI.

The boats are being built by Hardy Marine Ltd in Norfolk and will be delivered in August of this year and February 2007. They will be based on the Hardy Commodore 42, a classic trawler motor yacht chosen by Motor Boat & Yachting magazine as number 37 in the 'Top 100 Boats Ever'.

The vessels will be used by the RNLI to train coxswains and navigators in basic boat handling skills and will be equipped to sleep six on training missions which extend for up to a week away from the RNLI's base in Poole.

Modified to serve as floating classrooms, the new boats will replace two second hand Nelson 45s which are now 30 years old.

For Duro Marine, the order with the RNLI represents a breakthrough into territory long dominated by Wynn and Hepworth. Their new range of wipers feature specially designed and highly engineered drive mechanisms which are totally enclosed within a steel body sealed with plastic end covers.

No internal moving parts are exposed.

The quiet running drive system's movement alleviates stress as it changes direction, providing a smooth, shock-free action which extends the working life. The gearbox has 12 Oilite bearings, two needle bearings, up to three sealed ball bearings (depending on the unit), and four 'G' seals for maintenance free reliability.

Arms incorporate bronze bearings for smoother performance and a reinforced box section for greater strength and durability.

They are fitted to parallel drive spindles by non-slip double clamps which, together with adjustable blade clips, allow for perfect alignment of arm and blade.

All exposed parts are made from 316 stainless steel and bronze. Both drive shafts are gear driven for greater strength and durability. High volume washers pump out six litres per minute to further enhance performance.

The new units are available in Classes 30,50, 80 and 110, with pantograph Class 50 models going into the RNLI boats.
