The UK's Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has named former First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sir Jock Slater as its new Chairman. Sir Jock has been appointed following the retirement of Peter Nicholson CBE, who has served as Chairman since July 2000.

As a member of the RNLI's Council since 1999, Sir Jock has been Deputy Chairman since 2002. He has served on various RNLI committees including two years as Chairman of the Operations Committee between 2000 and 2002.

Commenting on Sir Jock's appointment by the Trustee Committee, RNLI Chief Executive Andrew Freemantle said, 'We are delighted to welcome Sir Jock on board as our new Chairman, especially given the wealth of Naval and seafaring experience that he brings with him. Jock is taking over at a very exciting time for the RNLI just ahead of the official opening of our new Lifeboat College and Survival Centre.

'On behalf of the RNLI, I'd like to extend our warmest thanks to Peter Nicholson who has served as Chairman for the past four years.'
