74.3m eco-friendly hybrid Ro-Ro ferry ordered in Hamburg will complete a trio of acclaimed, double-ended ships for shallow water island service in the German Bight, reports Tom Todd.

The new car/passenger ship will operate between the north German mainland and the East Frisian island of Norderney and is for delivery in May 2020 to AG Reederei Norden-Frisia.

Being built by Hamburg shipyard Pella Sietas, it will complete a three-ship fleet rejuvenation which has already seen two award-winning newbuildings enter service and the completion of a new terminal to handle them on Norderney.

The 57.8m cargo and supply ship Frisia Vlll, built at Sietas in 2010, was the first German ship to win Blauer Engel certification for environmentally friendly quality and design. The 74.3m car/passenger Frisia lll, won the award in 2017. It was built in 2015 by Cassens Werft, which was at last word closing down in June because of a lack of orders. Norden Frisia is confident that its nearly identical new sister will now complete the hat trick of accolades.

The new 1,786gt ferry, 13.4m wide, will draw just 1.75m and be weight optimised – features required of all ships operating in the shallow waters between the East Frisian islands and the mainland.

Norden Frisia inspector Thomas de Vries said it will have a fuel efficient Blue Drive Plus C hybrid propulsion system from Siemens. Part of the diesel-electric drive output will come from batteries which replace one diesel generator and reduce CO2 emissions by 15% as well as providing power when the ship is in port.

Apart from those innovations, engine configuration on the new ship will be identical to that on Frisia lll, de Vries told Maritime Journal.

Frisia lll’s propulsion consists of four Mitsubishi marine diesel generators Type S6 R-2-T2-MPTK of 700 kVA and four Voith Schneider drives Type VSP 16 KG/100 each with five blades. The scrubber plant is an SCR system from Kurre Abgastechnik with urea injection.

There is a similar scrubber plant on the trio’s supply ship FrisiaVlll, but unlike the two bigger, more modern island ferries, that vessel  is driven by two six-cylinder Volvo Penta diesels Type D16MH 500 each of 368kW. Among other equipment it boasts a Dutch Veth-Jet driven by a Scania Dl1642M diesel.
