'Lyme Bay' Gets Going at Govan

Works on the RFA 'Lyme Bay' are underway at The BAE Systems yard at Govan.

The Marine Division of the Gateshead UK based Pyeroy Group has been awarded the painting contract for the RFA 'Lyme Bay' as part of the completion works now being undertaken by BAE Systems at its shipyard in Govan, Glasgow.

The unfinished vessel was transferred from the Swan Hunter shipyard on the Tyne last year.

Pyeroy's contract is worth several million pounds and also includes the provision of scaffolding and containment systems and industrial cleaning services.

The protective coatings work will involve the preparation and coating of topside and superstructure surfaces, blasting and coating external weather decks and the refurbishment of all internal compartments. The contract includes the application of specialist coatings on the flight deck areas.

The painting work is expected to continue until this summer, when the RFA Lyme Bay is scheduled to be ready for final inspection before leaving the Clyde.

Pyeroy has long standing links with major ship repair, shipbuilding and the Royal Naval Dockyards. The company has offices in Rosyth, Belfast, Govan and Birkenhead to manage its commercial and Royal Navy contracts.

Recently the company also won the contract for painting and protective coatings work required by Babcock Engineering Services as part of the refit of 'HMS Liverpool', a Type 42 destroyer, in the Rosyth Royal Dockyard.

Hugh Pelham, managing director of Pyeroy, said: "These are highly prestigious contracts and have been won against stiff competition. We had not previously worked on the RFA Lyme Bay and won the contract after it was put out to tender following its transfer to the Clyde. We expect to have a team of 120 working on the vessel over the next five or six months.'
