Parker Kittiwake guidance on condition monitoring
Because heavy fuel oil is still the fuel of choice for many operators, Parker Kittiwake has produced comprehensive guidance on how to implement good housekeeping policies for fuel, hydraulic, and lubricating oil.
“With such a diversity of options, it’s difficult to predict what the fuel of choice of the future will be when the next generation starts purchasing newbuild vessels. But for today’s vessel owners, for its ready availability and safety, the fuel of choice is overwhelmingly heavy fuel oil,” said Larry Rumbol, marine condition monitoring manager, Parker Kittiwake.
He said that given the complexity of the regulations governing vessel operations, it is vital for all operating personnel to understand the physical characteristics of fuel, hydraulic and lubricating oil, coupled with an awareness of sampling and testing systems and processes and the significance of test results.
The Parker Kittiwake Gold Guide covers topics from density and dispersants, to polymer thickeners and particulate analysis, with each topic is covered in detail throughout the manual with salient points continually highlighted throughout.
Mr Rumbol said that many owners, managers and operators, especially of small fleets and smaller vessels, aren’t necessarily aware of the condition monitoring tools and technology available, or the return on investment that a proactive approach can quickly deliver, whatever the vessel or fleet size.
The Gold Guide is an impartial and independent, definitive reference guide that includes peer-reviewed input from Wärtsilä, NSD Corporation, ExxonMobil, IBIA, John H Whitaker Tankers, the Institute of Marine Engineers, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
