The new SEC 4-cylinder diesel engine from Steyr marks a significant step in the development of the company’s engine family. This is the first time that an enhanced common rail injection system has been used for a monoblock marine engine. The company claims that this development boosts performance as well as efficiency thus reducing fuel emissions.

Steyr Motors has been a pioneer in the monoblock engine segment and they claim that this design concept allows a compact design, and good power-to-weight ratio as well as offering a long service life and operational reliability. This is combined greater efficiency, smooth and quiet operation, as well as lower emissions from the common rail fuel injection technology. On top of this, the new engine series incorporates features that improve the service quality, ease of maintenance and advanced functionality.

Steyr is initially launching four basic models of the SEC 4-cylinder engine series. These offer power outputs from 59 to 129 kW. All of these engines are based on a 4-stroke, four cylinder 2.1 litre unit that features both turbo-charging and inter-cooling. The SEC84E34 version offers just 59 kW when operating at 3400 rpm and this version is designed for heavy duty operations such as harbour and fish farm workboats. The top of the range unit, the SEC184E41 offers 129kW at 4100rpm and a pair of these engines could be viable power for performance RIBs. All of the engines weigh 234kg.

These new engines will meet EPA Tier III emission requirements and qualify for SOLAS installations as well as meeting the DNV requirements for free fall lifeboats. These qualifications should enhance the application of the engines in the workboat sector.

Steyr is also developing a new service tool to match this new engine range. Detailed information on the installed engine is provided, thus, preventing the drive system from serious damage thanks to continuous condition monitoring. This will be able to identify maintenance requirements at an early stage, simplifying and shortening maintenance services, and optimizing engine development.

Moreover, based on a variety of options and system solutions, the engine can be designed to suit Steyr Motors’ customers’ individual requirements. The engines can be matched to a variety of propulsion options ranging from conventional shaft and propellers through to sail drive units.

Unlike most engine manufacturers, Steyr has focused on producing diesel engines in the smaller sizes. The largest engine in their range is the 6-cylinder 257kW unit and this focus on smaller engines has given them un-rivalled experience in this sector. The company has also been a pioneer in the development of hybrid diesel engine systems that combine electric and diesel propulsion.
