Off-grid power container does what it says on the tin
Motive Offshore is addressing the requirement for cheap, clean off-grid power in a number of ways; not least via its renewable hybrid power container.
The integrated power containers are custom-built to suit customers’ needs dependant on working environment, kW load demand and location specific needs. They typically combine a large battery pack, solar panel and wind tyrbine with a diesel genset. According to Motive Offshore they provide a multitude of benefits, including the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions due to its marinised technology and providing a 96% reduction in OpEx costs through fuel efficiency, examples of which have already been achieved in the North Sea.
The power containers also offer an option for providing storage of goods, spare parts and tooling, therefore freeing up deck space and require less attention in maintenance as they only require servicing every second year as opposed to constant monitoring and maintenance required from diesel gensets significantly reducing maintenance costs on platforms and the need to deploy personnel in difficult to reach locations. This in turn results in lower operational costs, in comparison to traditional diesel-powered generators, which not only require almost constant attention but also refuelling and replacement.
The containers have a 25-year design life and utilise small scale wind turbines and solar photovoltaics (PV) panels that have been successfully deployed in the North Sea for over 18 years.
Although the units were predominantly designed for the needs of the offshore energy and marine industries, there is also the opportunity for them to be utilised in remote villages across the world that do not have electricity.
