Crane construction oversight in China
Four new gantry cranes have arrived safely at their new home in Hamburg’ s Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) following the close supervision of their construction by Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC).
HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai GmbH awarded Hamburg Port Consulting GmbH (HPC) a contract to supervise the construction of the four new gantry cranes at the ZPMC site in Shanghai.
The cranes were the remaining four of five twin-forty container gantry cranes bound for berth number 2 of Hamburg’s Container Terminal Burchardkai, which arrived at their destination in the autumn.
During the construction of the cranes, HPC assigned two mechanical engineers who inspected the construction progress on a daily basis, including material cutting, assembly of single pieces and erection of the complete crane.
They focussed in particular on the inspection of the welding seams to make sure that proper welding procedures and their correct execution were adhered to. HPC’s engineers also attended the manufacturer’s non-destructive tests as well as supplementary material tests and checked the test results.
Any defects and outstanding works were documented in daily inspection sheets throughout the whole construction period. HPC’s engineers provided these inspection reports to the Chinese project manager and building staff, giving respective instructions.
As the client, CTB was granted access to HPC’s reporting server and was thus able to follow up the project’s progress throughout the whole construction period online and everyday as a comprehensive project progress report.
HPC’s real-time progress reports keep their clients up to date, enabling them to check on construction progress at any time and them to take action should any problems occur during the construction process.
Over the past six years, HPC has supervised the construction of some 70 container gantry cranes, 160 RTGs (Rubber Tyred Gantries) and 30 RMG (Rail Mounted Gantries) for various container terminals throughout the world.
