Hamburg Booming
By the beginning of December 2004, the Port of Hamburg had already matched the previous years record cargo handling volume of 106,283 million tons and was heading for a year end figure of approximately 115 million tons, an increase of 8.5%.
The shipyard’s Gudrun Knechtel spoke to Maritime Journal about some of the work carried out during a recent flurry of activity which reports said had provided the facility with a good work load on its three available slipways. Those slipways are 50, 81 and 105m long and of between 9m and 14.6m wide.
The container handling volume of the Port doubled from 3.5 million TEU to 7.1 million TEU between 1998 and 2004, boosted by the 1999 fairway deepening and booming foreign trade with China and the Far East.
