Author Richard Birmingham trained at the International Boatbuilding Centre in Lowestoft UK and, since writing this book, has become a leading figure in the small craft sector of the maritime community.

He is the first Professor of Small Craft Design at Newcastle University and the founding editor of the International Journal of Small Craft Technology.

A fundamental premise of this book is that despite the advent of many other materials for hull construction, the boatbuilder is still primarily concerned with working in wood. Whether building an entire boat from scratch or just completing a bare hull, sound woodworking skills are essential. Plentiful diagrams and photography complement a straightforward, methodical text in delivering the required knowledge.

The book is divided into three sections, with Part 1 covering the wide range of techniques and skills needed when constructing a boat, from interpreting plans to hints on working different timbers. Part 2 discusses materials, with detailed tables providing information about the principal boatbuilding hardwoods. Metals and corrosion is also discussed, as are fastenings, adhesives, sealants, and sheathing systems to protect the timber from damage and to improve watertightness. Part 3 gives advice on tools and how to use them, with tools categorised in terms of their purpose.
