31st IADC seminar spotlights Abu Dhabi
At the very end of 2008, twenty professionals from around the world got acquainted with dredging and its challenges during the 31st IADC International Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation.
The seminar was organised by the International Association of Dredging Companies in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 22 – 26 November 2008. Since 1993 the IADC has regularly run week long seminars especially developed for professionals in dredging related industries.
The participants came from countries as far ranging as Cuba, Egypt, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Russia, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
A highlight of the week was the site visit to one of the exciting works underway in Abu Dhabi, the Sa’adiyat Project, where enthusiastic employees of an IADC dredging company showed participants dredging equipment in action and provided them with a better insight into the full scope of a large dredging project.
Dredging experts from IADC member companies presented the lectures and complemented theory with their practical knowledge and experience. Amongst the subjects covered were the development of new ports and maintenance of existing ports; project phasing; descriptions of types of dredging equipment and costing of projects and types of dredging projects.
A dinner enabled participants to meet and discuss the dredging world with employees of the dredging companies.
The next IADC seminar will be organised in cooperation with UNESCO – IHE in Delft, The Netherlands from 15 – 19 June 2009. This seminar is aimed at decision makers and their advisors in governments, port and harbour authorities, offshore companies and other organisations that have to execute dredging projects.
The cost of the seminar is ¢1,950 (VAT inclusive). The fee includes all tuition, seminar proceedings, workshops and another special participants’ dinner but is exclusive of all travel costs and accommodation.
