DEME joins the jumbo dredger club
The Belgian contractor DEME (Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV), which includes Dredging International, has joined the jumbo trailing suction hopper dredger operators club by placing an order with IHC Merwede for a 30,000 m³ capacity vessel.
The contract for the ship has gone to IHC Dredgers BV. Construction will take place at the IHC Krimpen Shipyard in Krimpen aan den Ijssel, with completion scheduled for mid-2011.
The ship will have a relatively shallow draught of 12m which will enable it to be used in a wide variety of operations. DEME refers to the vessel as its ‘Next Generation Plus’ trailer and claims it will be the most advanced of its type worldwide, both operationally (efficiency for short and long transport distances, dredging system, steering systems, etc) and ecologically (minimum emissions and environmentally friendly dredging.
The company says that its 30,000 m³ jumbo will have the operational flexibility which of their Nile River, which has a capacity of only 18,000 m³. The 168m LOA vessel will have a maximum dredging depth of 56m.
This is the 90th dredging vessel to be produced by IHC Merwede for DEME. The 88th, the 5,600 m³ TSHD Artevelde, was launched on 19 December at the IHC Beaver Dredgers yard in Sliedrecht. The launch of the 89th vessel, another trailing suction hopper dredger, is planned for late December 2010 at the VSH yard in Heusden.
