Combatting Piracy comes to London
It is obvious in the face of growing piracy issues that the maritime industry itself needs to come together to share the most recent findings and analysis on the subject, and talk about ways to minimise the risk of attack.
‘It won’t happen every month, but when piracy becomes a problem it is a huge problem and therefore it is hard to assess exactly where to make the investment in security, Alex Cameron of the upcoming Combating Piracy event told

. ‘The risk covers such a broad area, and though there are international forces in the region, we are really proud that we have got the industry on board this event.’This April’s conference is an opportunity to hear case studies from AP-Muller-Maersk, OSG, K-Line and Stena Line Group as well as the latest from missions operating in the Gulf of Aden, including Operation Atalanta and the UKMTO. Key experts will be sharing the latest thinking behind how to abolish piracy and delegates will examine the latest piracy trends and tactics.
The event will be chaired by Peter Hinchliffe, Marine Director of the ICS. Other speakers, including Christian Dupont of the European Commission’s Unit for Maritime Security, will talk about valuable steps to protect shipping. Commodore Neil Brown of the British Royal Navy will analyse the legal issues in the development and conduct of maritime security and a US perspective on piracy will be analysed by Owen Doherty, director of the Office of Security at MARAD. Giles Noakes of BIMCO will explain how changes of attitude to the subject of piracy are necessary.
Two interactive workshops will examine not only the legal and commercial consequences of a piracy attack, but also the media behaviour that follows it. There will be time to share information with heads of security, safety, risk and crisis directors, security firms, legal advisors, insurers and risk consultants. The organisers say they will also be on hand to set up informal discussions on site.
The Combating Piracy event runs from 28 to 30 April 2009 at the Grosvenor Hotel in London.
