QM2 completes Queens busy week
It has been an eventful week for Cunard Line’ s classic Queens QE2 and QM2. First the QE2 ran aground approaching the UK Port of Southampton early on Tuesday morning and today its big sister QM2 sails for Southampton after a major refit in Hamburg.
Having spent the last 20 days in dry dock Elbe 17 of Blohm + Voss Repair, a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the Queen Mary 2 was scheduled to be undocked this morning.
The longest ocean liner in the world was scheduled to sail before the morning high tide at 3:30 AM (high tide: 4:01 AM) for Southampton, from where it will start its next transatlantic voyage to New York on Saturday.
Following its refit, the QM2 will be fit for service for another five years. The works carried out include a major overhaul of the four propulsion pods in cooperation with the manufacturer Rolls-Royce, routine maintenance of the three bow thrusters, routine maintenance and inspection of the four stabilizers, renewal of brake linings at the windlasses and inspection of electric motors and coating of the hull with some 35,000 litres of paint. The 17 lifeboats and tender boats have been overhauled by the manufacturer Schat-Harding. Also completed was the cleaning and inspection of various tanks (fuel tanks, fresh water tanks, grey water tanks, black water tanks) by the classification society and completion of various classification works such as overhauling the sea valves.
