It is the follow up to

Coasters of South Devon

which was published in 2007. This book looks at the ports in Cornwall that have seen commercial activity during the four decades from 1967 onwards. It follows the journey westwards started by the previous book and this volume continues the journey beginning at Fowey and finishing at Padstow on the north coast of Cornwall.Trade through Cornish ports has traditionally been dominated by exports of raw materials, most notably, tin, china and china clay. The ports in Cornwall are often set in picturesque locations which offer an attractive and colourful background for the ships.

Tin production is Cornwall’s oldest recorded industry and exports can be traced back to the Roman settlement in the area. In the 20th century, Cornwall has become best known for the production of china clay. Since 2007 globalisation has had a great impact on the Cornish China Clay industry and only filler clays have been produced in Cornwall. Globalisation has also had an effect on many trades in Cornwall, which is illustrated by this book.

The book has 89 colour photographs of ships in ports throughout Cornwall and each photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption giving information about the ship and its location. The ports featured in the book include Fowey, Par, Charlestown, Falmouth, Penryn, Truro, Gweek, Porthoustock, Dean Quarry, Penzance, Newlyn, Hayle and Padstow.

Bernard McCall has written over 20 maritime books in the last two decades and established the magazine Coastal Shipping in 1994. He owns a successful publishing company in Bristol.
