Box Terminal Gets Go Ahead
Associated British Ports (ABP) welcomed the Government decision last month to permit construction of the proposed Quay 2005 container terminal at the companys northern Port of Hull. The two berth development would be built on the riverside in front of the present Alexandra Dock and will allow the port to accommodate larger boxships than can currently be handled and meet expected growth in shortsea container traffic.
Container volumes at Hull rose by 10.2% in the first half of last year.
With a projected capital cost estimated at up to £35m, the terminal will only be built once ABP has a customer contract in place. The group is currently in negotiations with potential users of the facility, which will take some 18 months to build.
Development proposals had attracted significant objections from local residents.
ABP have agreed measures, now in progress, with national and local nature conservation bodies to create habitat for local wildlife at Chowder Ness, on the south shore of the Humber near the Humber Bridge. This is compensation for estuarial habitat which would be taken by Quay 2005.
