Dredging under way at Port of Ramsgate in UK – by David Foxwell
Dredging got underway at the Port of Ramsgate in the UK at the end of February, a project which will enable larger and deeper draft vessels to enter Ramsgate’s commercial port.
The project, which was carried out by Westminster Dredging, was due to last for approximately three weeks and see the silt dredged and deposited at two licensed dumpsites at Pegwell Bay and Dover.
Once the first stage of dredging was complete, a larger dredger was able to come into the port to remove the silt that is needed to enable the TransEuropa/LD lines ship Ostend Spirit to operate the new joint service to Ostend for both freight and passengers.
Councillor Roger Latchford OBE, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said dredging was essential in order to enable the port to accommodate a new, larger vessel which was due to arrive at the port for the first time on 20 March, and to enable increased usage of the port by vessels serving the offshore windfarm industry.
