Antwerp harbour celebrates completion of Scheldt dredging
Towards the end of December the last dredgers working on the Western Scheldt channel completed work and unloaded their final deposit of sand.
The Western Scheldt (which is in Dutch territory) and Lower Sea Scheldt (which is Belgian) form a 130km access route to the port of Antwerp.
Now that dredging of the Dutch section, which was started in February 2010, has been completed, ships will be able to travel the entire length of the Westerscheldt with a depth of 13.10 metres, including at low tide.
A total of 7.7m cu/m of sand were dredged from a number of locations in the channel.
