HYBRID power regeneration for winches
America winch specialist Markey Machinery has released its HYBRID power regeneration feature as a standard option for its new Render-Recover equipped electric winches.
Continuing a tradition of solid innovation, Markey first integrated its DEPGF-42 HYBRID electric hawser winch into Foss Maritime’s hybrid powered tug Carolyn Dorothy in 2009. Since then, the operational capability and environmental efficiency of the Carolyn Dorothy has exceeded all expectations.
Judging by the number of DEPGF-42 winches deployed in Foss Maritime’s fleet it can be seen as indicative of their level of satisfaction with Markey’s product.
Results of University of California at Riverside’s study of the Carolyn Dorothy’s operations in San Pedro Bay underscore the environmental and operational efficiency of blended HYBRID winches and tugs.

Talking to MJ about the type of vessel most likely to benefit from the application of Markey’s HYBRID technology, he said, “Whether you outfitting a modern hybrid escort tug with hawser winches, or retrofitting the older drives of an oceanographic research winch, as the cost of fuels continue to rise, energy efficiency becomes increasingly more important. The dramatic November 2010 rescue of the stranded cruise ship Carnival Splendor by the Markey equipped SMBC Monterrey emphasises the underlying strength and controllability of Markey’s next generation technology.
