Alvaro de Ornelas delivered for Azores

Ireland’s Safehaven Marine has supplied a second of its new Interceptor 38/11.5m pilot vessel to the Islands of the Azores, situated some 1,000 miles out into the Atlantic between Europe and America.

The 11.5m pilot boat uses Safehaven’s proven Interceptor deep V, twin chine semi-displacment hull design, which is known for its exceptional seakeeping abilities. Alvaro de Ornelas is powered by twin Volvo D9 engines rated at 425 hp and driving through ZF ‘V’ Drive gearboxes for an operational speed of 22 knots. The vessel has a maximum speed of 25 knots and achieves a bollard pull 4.5 tons.

This smaller Interceptor 11.5m ‘Pilot’ design features a central cabin position, allowing for an aft cockpit which is fitted with a Mampaey quick release tow hook. The design also incorporates a ‘pusher’ bow that allows the vessel to be used for occasional ‘pusher tug’ duties, assisting pilots in manoeuvring smaller ships. The main accommodation features four pilot seats in a staggered height configuration, providing excellent visibility for all pilots. A central helm position allows excellent control for the helmsman whether boarding to port or starboard . The Interceptor 38 pilot is a multi-purpose vessel which allows a port to combine multiple duties within one design.

Safehaven Marine is currently building an Interceptor 48 pilot boat for the Port of Algecerias in Spain after being awarded the contract in September. This vessel’s hull and superstructure are now completed and the vessel is due for delivery in summer 2012. It will be powered by Volvo D13 engines rated at 500 hp and will be able to carry up to six pilots at 24 knots.

This will be the fifth Interceptor 48 pilot built by Safehaven, following on from sisterships supplied to Bordeaux, Liverpool, Malta and Cork, and will be the 22nd pilot vessel supplied by the builder. It is proving to be Safehaven’s most popular pilot vessel, combining a larger boat’s capabilities in an economical and competitively priced design.
