ECDIS downloads for polar passages
A system which can download charts directly into the ECDIS is being put through its paces, as the ship on which it is placed will be sailing in the demanding waters of both poles.
The National Geographic Explorer, previously the MS Midnatsol, has taken the Adveto 4000 ECDIS through an extensive test and evaluation program. The move is a response to the IMO resolution that all passenger carrying ships on international routes and over 500 tons should be fitted with a type approved ECDIS by 2014 at the latest.
Beside the ability to download PRIMAR charts and updates over the internet there are other benefits to the system such as features like multi-routes, advanced predictors, and alternative night presentation.
Kent Sylvén, managing director of Adveto said that “the ship´s global traffic makes the chart handling very important”. He added that the idea is that the electronic order and download of the ECDIS solution should save time and money for the shipowner, Lindblad Expeditions.
