Regin Jespersen, representing that service, first visited Safehaven in February 2011 and since then Regin and Safehaven MD Frank Kowalski have worked on refining the vessel’s specification to a format that both believe will result in a fine rescue boat capable of dealing with the very extreme North Atlantic weather experienced in the Faroe Islands, where very large waves and storm force winds occur during winter months.

The self righting lifeboat is based on Safehaven’s proven and very successful Interceptor 48 Pilot. Even in its standard pilot configuration it is well suited to SAR roles by virtue of its wide side decks, cabin size and orientation, and a large and spacious forward accommodation area ideal for conversion into a survivors cabin.

The vessel is to be fitted with Volvo IPS units and D11 600hp engines which will provide a maximum speed well over 30 knots. The IPS units will incorporate Volvo’s dynamic positioning system, allowing the vessel to hold position and heading whilst stationary. This feature will be very useful when holding station during rescue operations.

The vessel will have seating for five crew in the main cabin and will be capable of carrying up to seven survivors/passengers between the main and forward cabins, together with the facility to deploy a stretcher for casualties.
