Scottish engineers win important accolade
A young Scottish engineering company has won an important business accolade at the Edinburgh Chamber Business Awards as the most promising new business.
Xi Engineering Consultants are specialists in providing vibration solutions using dynamic analysis and modelling to the renewable energy, construction, marine and defence industries.
Dr Mark-Paul Buckingham, managing director of Xi Engineering, said to Engineering Capacity: “The accolade helps raise our profile as a new company and helps to substantiate our value – in particular in the renewable energy sector.”
The company has gained notoriety for its work tackling vibration issues with wind turbines – including working with Hammerfest Strøm to successfully deploy the first HS1000 tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre at Orkney.
Xi’s work focused on developing structural-acoustic interaction models of the HS1000 during the design phase of the 1MW turbine. The models were then used to improve the design to limit potentially damaging vibrations.
The company has also worked with Rolls-Royce propulsion systems in the past.
Xi was created in May 2011 backed by a £400,000 goverment enterprise investment scheme with the aim of helping to advance Scotland’s stake in the renewable sector.
