Three new Safehaven Marine vessels, the Wildcat 53 catamaran Orca III, built as a Cat 0 wind farm/crew transfer vessel and sister ships Diogo de Teive and Josse van Hurtere, the third and fourth of a four vessel pilot boat order for the Azores Islands, are seen during sea trials off the port of Cork in Ireland.
Orca III (see story on page 33) is the third Safehaven boat for operator Angus Campbell, who will use it as a passenger vessel on the 100 nautical mile St Kilda run from the Isles of Harris out into the North Atlantic, often encountering 6m seas and very heavy weather. Safehaven’s famed seakeeping has been proven with the two earlier boats and will serve Orca III in its variety of intended roles. Orca III has been specially adapted to also undertake wind farm support, hydrographic survey and dive support duties. Unlike earlier Wildcat 53s, Orca III features a single level superstructure design as opposed to a raised bridge deck, allowing forward visibility for all passengers.
Powered by twin Scania D16 700hp engines driving conventional propellers, Orca III will run at 18 to 20 knots on the trips to St Kilda and can attain a maximum speed of 24 knots.
The final two pilot boats for the Azores are Safehaven’s Interceptor 38/11.5m model, featuring a deep V, twin chine, semi-displacement hull design. Powered by twin Volvo D9 engines, they have an operational speed of 22 knots.
