Hand lay-up course a success at Marchwood
Composite Manufacturing (CML) and Brockenhurst College have completed the first run of City and Guilds accredited five day hand laminating courses held at their facilities in Marchwood, Southampton UK.
The course was well received by the candidates, who felt the collaboration had added benefits to the learning experience.
After some initial health and safety briefings at Brockehurst’s site, the groups moved to CML’s facility where they constructed a model boat hull with bulkheads. They then damaged the hull and carried out a repair. Each practical session was followed up by a classroom session.
The course was attended by a variety of candidates from enthusiasts to professionals wanting to enhance skills or better understand the process.
Graham Davidson, who wants to build his own boat, commented, “The course was successful in not simply being accessible to complete novices like myself but being sufficiently intensive that it propelled those of us with no experience well down the road to being confident practitioners. The pace was rapid but the teaching and facilities made it both an enjoyable and cost effective training course.”
Gary Hales, marine manager at Brockenhurst College said, “The whole idea of partnering with CML was to give people coming onto the course a real valuable learning experience of what this work is all about. I’m really proud of both my lecturers and CML for putting so much effort into making sure everyone had a unique experience and mastered the basics of GRP work.”
