Soft drinks only after windfarm work
A Ramsgate UK seafront café/bar has been refused a licence to serve alcohol from 6:00 am to satisfy the demand from sailors from Denmark and the Netherlands.
They like a glass of schnapps with their breakfast after clocking off from night shift on the offshore windfarms off the Kent coast.
The Belgian Cafe already has a licence to serve alcohol from 7:00 am, adopting a continental style model, as the round the clock workings of the offshore wind industry has obviously introduced something of a niche market demand.
At a meeting of the local licencing sub-committee however, Councillor Michael Roberts was concerned that it would be impossible to discriminate between those coming off shift and those about to set out for the day. He had other concerns also, reportedly adding. “As an ex-navy man myself, I know what can happen on a ship where the sale of alcohol is involved. It is a dangerous environment at the best of times”
On the bright side however, the café was granted permission to play live music daily until 9.30 pm with plans for jazz nights and open-mic nights, so the windfarm workers will be able to sing and dance at least part of the night away on their days off.
