South African double for Damen
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) in South Africa has put in a new double workboat order with Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) for a new Pilot Cutter 2706 and a Stan Tug 2006.
TNPA already operates a fleet of Damen Stan Tugs. The new Stu 2006 order is an updated design based on the STu 1906 which will then be adapted to the needs of the South African port authority. Specifically, these tweaks include the need for increased payload and hull speed as well as increased gear protection whilst handling submerged equipment. The tug will be used for general port duties at the Port of Saldanha and is due for delivery in March 2013.
The Pilot Cutter order comes on the back of a large upgrade programme of TNPA workboats. The 2706 has been designed by Damen in conjunction with Triton Naval Architects. It will also be customised to the port authority’s requirements with a specific hull shape needed to negotiate the narrow entrance channel to Saldanha. The new hull shape will be able to handle adverse sea conditions whilst still maintaining a good speed. The Pilot Cutter is due for delivery in May 2013.
Both vessels are being built at DSCT which has recently expanded in order to cater for increased demand and a growing workforce.
