IMarEST lecture: saving lives at sea
The topic for this years Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology’s (IMarEST) annual President’s Day Lecture has been selected: The Marine Engineering, Science and Technology of Saving Lives at Sea.
The lecture will be hosted by the 110th president, Malcolm R Vincent CEng CMarEng FIMarEST. He will outline the role of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in saving lives at sea and the role played by the IMarEST.
He said, “Not only are the two organisations linked by the sea but they are also both dependent upon the volunteering ethos of its members, one to save lives at sea, the other to deliver our learned society activities. I will be attending a number of branch events in the UK in the next few weeks before setting off to meet some of our overseas branch members.”
The lecture will also look at the environmental challenges facing the RNLI’s fleet and crew. Mr Vincent will use the beach launched Shannon class lifeboat, due to enter service shortly, to demonstrate the design and construction cycle of an all-weather lifeboat and will finish with an outline of seakeeping problems encountered and overcome.
