Russian shipyard to build Finnish dredger designs

The construction work will be done at the Russian shipyard Ozeyhsky which is located at the town of Karelia on Lake Onega.

Wasa Dredging operates a fleet of back hoe dredgers which they build in their own shipyard. The latest of these dredgers is fitted with a back Hoe dredger supplied by Hitachi which can dredge to a 29 metre depth and which is fitted with spud poles. The bucket capacity can be up to 18 cu.m depending on the spoil being excavated. This 45 metre design is one of the most capable back hoe dredgers in Scandinavia and the company works on dredging projects around the Baltic with a speciality of underwater rock blasting and spoil removal. The yard also builds hopper barges for spoil removal.

A spokesman for Rosmorport, Andre Tarasenko said, “Such dredging equipment is not available in Russia today though it is very much in demand.” According to Vladimir Mausus the director of the Ozeyhsky Shipyard, “We have all the equipment at the yard for the construction of these dredgers and this will mean new jobs at the yard.

Ozeyhsky Shipyard was founded in 1944 and although the lake it land locked it is connected to the sea via the White Sea Canal that links the Baltic and Whites Seas. Previously the yard had focussed on building small coastal vessel and river/sea ships up to the length limit of 135 metres
