Veth hybrid Z-drive system for Eddy Tug

Netherlands-based Veth Propulsion has signed a contract at Europort 2015 with Holland Shipyard for the delivery of two VZ-1800 Hybrid Drives. The Z-drive hybrid system will also include an inline E-motor opposite the Mitsubishi diesel engine, and generator sets for the new build Eddy tug 24-75.

This Hybrid Harbour Tug will be named Telstar after a soccer club in Ijmuiden. Jim Iskes’ (Telstar’s new owner) favorite club. Telstar will be the fourth Iskes tug, which will be equipped with Veth Z-drives.

It is a completely new concept design with a slender hull form and thrusters in the centre for high stability and fuel efficiency. It is built on the concept of Eddy Tug 1, but will have more Bollard Pull.

With regards to the tug market, Veth Propulsion developed an optimized nozzle, the so called VOB-50, which allows the Telstar to realize 75 tonnes Bollard Pull. Telstar is an environmentally friendly tug with a hybrid propulsion system, which is due to be delivered in May 2016.

The contract includes: 2x Veth Hybrid Drive, type VZ-1800-VHD (2350 kW / 1500 rpm), 2x Scania DI16 – Stamford generator (640 kW),1x SISU Diesel engine – Stamford generator (85 kW). Propulsion will be provided by a2600 mm propeller within a VOB 50 (optimized 19A) nozzle.
