Green ships at Antwerp
The port of Antwerp has seen a significant increase in the number of environmentally friendly seagoing ships.
According to the results of the Environment Ship Index (ESI), the number of ships qualifying for a discount of port dues has risen from 462 in 2012 to a recorded 671 during the first nine months alone of 2015.
The ESI enables ports to grant a discount on port dues for ships that reduce emissions of pollutants such as NOx and SOx to levels below that which is set by the IMO.
Each port sets its own benefits and qualifying companies wishing to enjoy these must submit information via the independent secretariat of the International Association of Ports and Harbours.
Antwerp offers a 10% discount to calls by ships with a score of 31 or more.
The fifth anniversary of the ESI was celebrated in Paris on 3 and 4 December 2015 to coincide with the UN Climate Change Conference.
