Scilly Isles power cable repaired
A damaged power cable connecting the Scilly Isles, off South West England, to electricity on the UK mainland, has been repaired by a CWind DPS-2 vessel.
CWind, part of the Global Marine Group, announced that its specialist cable installation vessel, the C.S. Sovereign, successfully restored power to the cable, which was damaged by an anchor in February.
The Sovereign’s crew of cable engineers used remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) deployed from the aft deck to survey the cable on the sea bed, locate the fault and recover the cable ends before successfully completing the joint, at a depth of 70 metres.
Andy Lloyd, director of power cables at CWind, said: “The project was challenged by inclement weather, strong currents and restricted tide times but, together with the team at Western Power Distribution (WPD), we worked tirelessly to get the work completed within a month.”
Mr Lloyd added that cable was “significantly damaged”, but the repair team created a “shorter, more direct” route between the connection points.
CWind confirmed that the C.S. Sovereign, which works on both power and fibre optic cable installation and repair projects, will return to the site within the next few weeks to complete further surveys and protection works on the cable.
