Conference consolidates marine energy and coastal protection

The ICE Breakwaters conference addresses the design, performance, installation and maintenance of breakwaters, seawalls, jetties, piers and beach control structures. This conference, for the first time, will also cover the latest material on the design and installation of the structures necessary to extract marine and wind energy around nearshore seas and coasts.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Professor William Allsop said, ‘I am delighted that Jim Mather MSP, who is responsible for Scotland’s green energy policy, will open the conference. This reflects the global recognition of the importance of offshore renewable energy, as well as the importance of coastal protection and related marine structures. The Breakwaters conference series is seen to promote the impartial exchange of new knowledge in these areas of coastal engineering.

‘Climate change presents new challenges to engineers every day. At this conference, authors and delegates will be discussing how we can minimise the impact of rising sea levels on our coasts, through sensitive and intelligent engineering.’

The 2009 Breakwaters conference will be held at Edinburgh International Conference Centre on 16 – 18 September 2009. Mr Mather will open an event at which over 100 high profile practitioners and academics will present the latest advances and research in their fields.

Over 30 international organisations from all around the world are supporting the conference and over 300 delegates are expected to attend. The conference also features a technical exhibition that will showcase a wide range of companies and organisations.
