Corrosion workshop will come to you
With the UK seen as the world leader in wave and tidal power device development, Copper Development Association has taken steps to address the resulting demand for information on marine alloys possessing corrosion and biofouling resistance by offering in-house workshops.
Organised in association with the Nickel Institute and endorsed by the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining for CPD, these events provide the latest information on the properties and performance of alloys used in sea water and an opportunity to address company specific design enquiries. The expert lead speaker will be Carol Powell, deputy chair of the European Federation of Corrosion’s Marine Corrosion Working Party. Engineers new to the marine environment are not always familiar with the range of alloys already available that have a sustainable and proven track record in many applications such as desalination, offshore oil and gas and shipbuilding; nor do they have experience of how to design and operate them to achieve their full potential. For example, one alloy, copper nickel, has been used as splash zone sheathing on offshore structures and, due to a combination of high corrosion resistance and inherent resistance to biofouling, it has also been used for boat hulls. It could have a role to play here and indeed in the protection of offshore wind turbine towers.
The workshop is free and run by recognised specialists in corrosion, biofouling, metallurgy and fabrication of these alloys. It covers the corrosion behaviour of metals in seawater, properties of copper alloys including copper nickels and aluminium bronze, stainless steels and high nickel alloys, as well as welding, overlays and fabrication. Relevant electrical applications of copper can also be covered if requested in advance. For further information, or to book a workshop, contact bryony.samuel@copperdev.co.uk
Copper Development Association and Nickel Institute are members of the Marine Corrosion Forum, and also the Copper-Nickel Task Group, a panel of international industry experts with a website that features peer-reviewed technical information and practical guidance on copper-nickel alloys (www.coppernickel.org)
